Explore Japanese WW2 Tunnels

During World War 2, the Japanese established their South Pacific base in Rabaul. The naturally protected harbour and surrounding mountains that overlooked it was a perfect place to fortify during the war. At the height of the Japanese occupation in Rabaul, close to 100,000 Japanese soldiers lived in underground tunnels. These tunnels acted as dormitories, hospitals, supply dumps and even housed full size barges and artillery.

With our journeys to Rabaul, you can now experience and explore these historic sites. What you want to see is up to you. From easily accessible sites through to adventurous tight squeezes, a visit to these locations will be something to truly remember. Visit bunkers, submarine basses, barge tunnels and more, witnessing the amazing feats of engineering that were undertaken by the Japanese during their occupation of Rabaul.
