The Fire Dancers

One of the more spectacular experiences you will witness in our Escape from Rabaul and Return to Rabaul journey's is the Baining Fire Dance.

This ancient practice is unique to the Baining Mountains region of East New Britain and involves an elaborate combination of costumes, masks, body paint, music, dance and of course fire. Typically held in the village common area, the Fire Dance involves men and women from all ages. The actual Fire Dance only involves the men of the village. A large bonfire is built and fueled until a large bed of fire and coals is established. In rhythm to the chants and sining of the accompanying dancers the men and their incredible masks and costumes dance in and through the fire long into the night.

Safety & Ethics

We have built strong relationships with local networks we encounter.

This continued relationship has allowed us to build upon a standard of excellence, giving you the consistency you deserve. Together we have pioneered the safest, most scenic and comfortable routes, scouted for those perfect campsites, and discovered the best of what's off the beaten track.

We maintain the highest quality of service possible, from carefully designing itineraries that allow for all contingencies. Our pathfinders are trained for remote emergencies, cultural considerations and customs surrounding their particular region of travel. Each pathfinder is equipped with a satellite phone and digital EPIRB. Daily GPS coordinates are called in to both our local and Australian contacts. This in conjunction with their Wilderness medical qualifications and a robust risk management plan will cater for any unforeseen incidents.

We endeavor to be role models for those around us and hope that our travels contribute to awareness and change needed for reducing the impact of future tourism.
